Africa : Kenya Big 5

Where did the term Big Five come from? It’s amazing to know that Africa has the biggest number of beautiful dangerous wild animals and among the smallest and the biggest animals, the big five are no doubt some of Africa’s top ten most dangerous animals in the world.

As far as the term or phrase Big Five is concerned, its all about animals or game and was coined by the white hunters who had come to hunt wild animals for pleasure and as a sport and to take their skin or tusks back to their home countries. The Big Five always referred to the five most difficult animals in Africa which are difficult to hunt on foot.

As many would have thought the term big five was invented by the  safari tour operators, they might have contributed its usage to the present day and its usage is no doubt in the minds and the hearts of people going on an African safari as well. It’s amazing to know that even the people who live where these animals are would be perplexed to know that some of the biggest animals in Africa or the most dangerous animals in Africa do not have a place in the term big five. Despite many big animals which could be as elusive or dangerous are not even in the most dangerous animals.

Given the reality of the Big Five, they do have their space in history and hold numerous records and encounters with man in many animal attacks episodes and other dangerous animal attacks which have been accounted for while some are just no even been documented,

As far as animal safaris in Africa are concerned, you find that there is little information about Africa’s Big Five and the overall usage for the term big five is profoundly used by most tourist who come to visit Africa big game and to have a glance at the big cats as well. On the other hand the term as well is used by may wildlife guides while they plan and talk about their African safaris and tours which they propagate to animal safari loving people as well.

The big five animal collection consists of just a few carnivorous and herbivorous animals which roam the African savannah valleys, forests arid and semi arid areas.

The most important of the big five is no doubt the king of the African jungle or the African lion, the African elephant, the Cape buffalo, the African leopard, and white and the black African rhinoceros collectively make up the big five.

As far as the history of the big five is concerned, these top ten most dangerous animals of Africa or the Big Five were carefully selected from a variety of good reasons. The most prominent reason for selecting the Big Five was due to their difficulty in hunting these dangerous animals which had entered Africa’s animal Hall of Fame just because of their sheer dangerous encounter with them and the degree of danger involved, rather than their size for some of the small animals as the African Leopard.

Not long ago or a few decades ago, Africa was the place for big game hunting. Guns and rifles of all sizes and sophistications were used to hunt these animals down. The carnage continued for decades until there was little or just the old and sick animals which posed no challenges to be hunted down without any adrenaline in the hunting adventure.

With the modern existing trends and the different efforts which have been used to help conserve and preserve these beautiful dangerous animals from extinction, the new wave of big game hunting especially the big five is not done with sophisticated arsenal and helicopters with night vision in the dead of the night but with state of the art photographs and cameras which can zoom in an animal from far away distances along the African bushes and thickets willed with wild animals grazing along the grasslands or just feeding on their new prey or just quenching their thirst after along hot days stroll along the African jungles.

During the annual great animal migration, the wildebeest and the zebras always fall prey of the big five mostly the lions and the leopards. While the big five mostly the carnivorous prey on these animals, during their migration, the wildebeest also have the chance to mingle with the other Savannah animals as well. During the animal migration, its this time when the Big five come into action. Herds of great animals big and small move in all direction all in search of the fresh green pastures which have just been waiting for them. While many of the animal loving safari patriots feast their cameras with beautiful images of the big five, eye catching videos and movies are also made documentaries of the big five and as a whole research about the big five as well.
